AI voice agents for Indian businesses: a practical guide

By Aethenox AI team · Updated 26 September 2026

Phone calls are still how many Indian customers reach a business, and missed calls are lost enquiries. An AI voice agent answers every call, talks to the caller in a natural voice and handles routine questions without a queue. This guide explains how the technology works, where it fits, what it costs, and what to get right on languages, recordings and consent.

What is an AI voice agent?

An AI voice agent is software that picks up a real phone call and holds a spoken conversation. It listens to what the caller says, works out what they want, answers from your own information and replies out loud. Unlike an IVR (“press 1 for sales”), the caller simply speaks, and the agent responds to what they actually said.

A good voice agent is not a replacement for your whole team. It is a first line that never sleeps: it answers the 9pm call, handles the questions your staff answer twenty times a day, and captures the details of anything it can't resolve so a person can follow up.

How does an AI voice agent answer a phone call?

Every turn of the conversation goes through three steps, in a loop that runs while the call is live:

  1. Speech recognition. The caller's audio is streamed to a speech-to-text model and transcribed as they speak. Aethenox AI uses Deepgram's Nova-3 multilingual model, which handles English, Hindi and callers who mix the two (Hinglish).
  2. Reasoning. The transcript goes to your AI agent. It follows your instructions, searches your knowledge base for the most relevant articles, and can call tools you have configured, such as a webhook to your own system, a Google Calendar check or a Google Sheet.
  3. Speech synthesis. The reply is turned into speech with Sarvam AI's text-to-speech and played to the caller. If you allow interruptions, the caller can cut in and the agent listens again, as a person would.

The same agent, knowledge base and tools can also reply on WhatsApp, so what you teach it once works on both channels. Read the AI agents docs for every setting.

Which Indian languages can an AI voice agent speak?

On Aethenox AI the agent can speak 11 languages: English (India), Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. There are 12 voices to choose from, six female and six male, and each channel can have its own language, so one agent can speak Hindi on one number and English on another.

Understanding callers is a separate question from speaking to them. Today the agent understands callers best in English, Hindi and Hinglish. If most of your callers speak another language, test with real calls in the Playground before you rely on it.

What can Indian businesses use a voice agent for?

  • After-hours and overflow calls. Answer when the office is closed or every line is busy, so nobody hears an endless ring.
  • Frequently asked questions. Opening hours, locations, fees, documents needed, order or booking status, answered from your knowledge base.
  • Lead capture and qualification. Ask the questions your sales team would ask and send the answers to your CRM or a sheet through a tool.
  • Appointments. With a calendar tool, check availability and create a booking during the call.

See more examples on the use cases page.

What do you need to set up an AI voice agent?

  1. An agent. Write a system prompt describing the agent's role and tone, choose a voice and language, and link knowledge base articles written in a question-and-answer format.
  2. A phone number. Buy a number from the dashboard, subject to the KYC checks that Indian telecom rules require, or connect a number you already have with Plivo, Exotel or Twilio. Numbers are a monthly rental on a 30-day cycle. See the phone numbers docs.
  3. A test. The Playground lets you call your agent from the browser (Chrome or Edge, with microphone access) and watch a live transcript, including what it retrieved from your knowledge base.
  4. Routing. Point the number at the agent, and decide what the agent should say when it can't help, for example taking the caller's details for a callback.

How much does an AI voice agent cost in India?

On Aethenox AI, voice is priced separately from plans, so you only pay for minutes you use. The pay-as-you-go rate is ₹8 per minute from your wallet, and prepaid packs of 100, 300 or 1,000 minutes cost less per minute. Pack minutes stay valid for 12 months. You need a Starter plan (₹1,999/month) for the agent, the number and the dashboard, plus the monthly number rental. Current figures are on the voice page and the pricing page. Prices exclude GST.

When you compare this with hiring, count the calls that arrive outside office hours or while every line is busy. Those are the calls an agent adds, rather than replaces.

Are AI voice calls recorded, and is the data safe?

On Aethenox AI, calls are recorded only if you enable call recording for the number. When it is on, you can play recordings back from the call log. Call logs also show direction, duration and status, and call analytics show volumes, answer rates, average duration, missed calls and peak hours. See the call logs docs.

Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest, and credentials and tokens are additionally encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Customer data, including call audio, is not used to train AI models; we have opted out of our speech provider's model-training programme. If you record calls, tell callers at the start of the call.

What should you know about outbound AI calling in India?

Inbound calls are the simplest place to start, because the customer chose to call you. Outbound calls need more care. India regulates commercial calls and messages, including rules on registered senders, customer preferences such as Do Not Disturb, and consent, and these rules change over time.

  • Call people who have a relationship with you and have agreed to be contacted.
  • Call at reasonable hours and identify your business at the start of the call.
  • Give people an easy way to say they don't want further calls, and honour it.
  • Keep outbound calls relevant: reminders and follow-ups on something the customer started.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Check the current rules with your telecom provider or adviser before you start outbound calling, and talk to us about your use case.

How do you know the voice agent is working?

Treat the first few weeks as a trial run and review real calls, not just totals. A few habits help:

  • Read the transcripts of calls the agent struggled with. Most wrong or vague answers come from a gap in the knowledge base. Add a short question-and-answer article for each gap and the next caller gets a better answer.
  • Watch answer rate and missed calls in call analytics. If calls are still being missed, check that the number is pointed at the agent for all hours, not just after closing time.
  • Look at average call duration. Very short calls can mean callers are hanging up on an unclear greeting; very long ones can mean the agent is over-explaining. Adjust the prompt to keep replies short, as a good receptionist would.
  • Keep a clear way out. Tell the agent exactly what to do when it can't help, such as taking a name and number for a callback, so no caller is left going in circles.

Small, regular changes to the prompt and knowledge base usually matter more than switching voices or models.

How do you get started?

Start a free trial, build an agent, test it in the Playground, and then connect a number. If your customers also message you, the same agent can answer on WhatsApp: see the WhatsApp Business API page and our WhatsApp Business API India guide.
